Heating Up Worker Safety Techniques

Jun 22, 2016

It’s getting to be that time of year. Soon the news will be filled with lists of heat stroke symptoms, the dangers of leaving a baby or a pet in a locked car, and other summer weather warnings.

It happens every summer—and because of that, many of us may find it easy to tune out those warnings.

But actually, heat-related illness does strike with startling regularity—and people can die from it. In fact, thousands of healthy adult workers get sick and dozens die each year from working in heat.

Of course, we know that no living creature should be left in a locked car on a hot summer day—but this season, make sure you’re taking care of yourself, too. Here are our top tips to help you hold on to your health in even the hottest weather:

  • Cover up. We’re talking wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and pants that can protect you from the sun’s rays.
  • Do not stay in hot, enclosed spaces (such as a parked car).
  • Drink up! Water and other fluids (aside from caffeinated, sugary, or alcoholic beverages) are vital in the heat.
  • During work or play, take regular breaks in cool, shady areas.
