All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

Eyes on Your Tires

The only thing separating your car—and everything inside it—from the road is your tires. So take a little inspiration from National Tire Safety Week (which starts today!) and take these simple steps to ensure your wheels are rolling along at maximum safety.

Check the Tire Pressure

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the leading cause of tire-related crashes is underinflated tires. Not only can low tires lead to a catastrophic blowout, they can negatively impact vehicle handling and gas mileage, in addition to leading to premature wearing. And tires can lose about one pound per square inch of air each month (more in cold weather). So take a look at your owner’s manual or the placard on your car’s door frame, determine your tires’ optimal PSI, and pump them up if needed.

Rotate Your Tires

Did you know it’s recommended that you rotate your tires every 6000-8000 miles? Aim to get them rotated every other oil change.

Don’t Delay Replacing Tires

No one wants to spend their hard-earned cash on new tires—but it beats the alternative: a blowout, a car crash, insurance claims, and injury. So keep an eye on your tire health, and when that tread starts wearing out, get yourself a new set.

How do you check the tread? The penny trick makes it simple. Slip a penny—Lincoln’s head first—in between the treads of your tires. If you can see the top of Honest Abe’s heads, your treads are too low and your tire needs replacing.

Do a Daily Inspection

Before you hit the road, give your tires a quick once-over. Check for bulges, cracks, cuts, and abnormal wear. And pay attention to how your car handles once you’re behind the wheel. If the vehicle tugs to one side, that can be a sign of an underinflated tire. And if the vehicle vibrates, it can be a sign of that one of the tires is out of balance or your wheels need to be aligned.

We’re coming up on the unofficial start of summer, the biggest road trip season of the year. Make sure your vehicle’s tires are up to the task!
