Fluffy and Fido Need Emergency Kits, Too

by David on Jun 19, 2019

We all know we should have an emergency kit ready to go if disaster strikes. But what many of us may not think about is that our pets need to have one, too.

June is National Pet Preparedness Month, which makes it a great time to put a kit together for your furry, or feathered, or scaly friend. Here’s how:

Consider the types of incidents that are likely to occur in your area. In California, many of us face earthquake and wildfire risk, and flash flood can occur anywhere. What types of gear and accessories will your pets need to stay safe in these different types of incidents?

Check your pet’s identification. Make sure your pal wears current identification—including your cellphone number. If your pet isn’t microchipped, now is a great time to take care of that important task.

Create a file of records for your pet, including license fees and medical records. Keep the file in a safe and secure place, and consider scanning those records and uploading to a secure location so you can access the information if you need it.

Research pet-friendly locations. If a disaster forces you to evacuate, you must be aware that not every hotel or shelter will accept animals along with people. Evacuation shelters and pet-friendly hotels outside a 60-mile radius of your home are good places to start. Websites like BringFido.com and GoPetFriendly.com offer searchable directories of pet-friendly lodging options.

Build the emergency kit! Of course you’ll want to include food and water—but your pet will need more than just the basics. What will help your pal to feel comfortable and less stressed during a difficult time? Include treats, toys, and a comfy blanket as well as a leash, trash bags, cat litter and litter pans, a pet first-aid kit, and extra medication if your pet takes any.

Invest in a pet carrier that’s large enough for your pet to feel comfortable in. Most importantly, don’t wait until disaster strikes to get your pet inside the carrier! Let your pet wander in and out of the carrier, then spend a little time in the closed carrier, and even hit the road with you while in the carrier. If your pal is used to being enclosed in the carrier, it will make it that much easier when you have to evacuate swiftly.

Emergencies are tough on everybody, which is why advance preparation is so important. Don’t wait until it’s too late: put your pet’s emergency kit together today!
