All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

Protecting Your Workers from Electrical Injury

Would you like to prevent worker injury and fatality at your company?

Okay, silly question. Every business owner/ operator, manager or supervisor wants to ensure the safety of the workforce. And, obviously, workers themselves would like to stay safe on the job.

But that doesn’t mean that everyone always follows every step of every safety procedure.

May is National Electrical Safety Awareness Month, and it’s a great time to give your workers a refresher course in basic electrical safety procedures, such as lockout/ tagout, proper extension cord usage, and how to properly extinguish an electrical fire.

Don’t assume your workers know how to safely manage electrical equipment—or that they really are following correct procedures. Just think of how your family uses electrical equipment at home! We’re willing to bet they don’t always follow the safest procedures—such as not connecting extension cords to each other, or substituting extension cords for permanent wiring.

After all, if everyone were following correct safety procedures, we wouldn’t have stats like this one to share with you: each year about 3,300 home fires originate in extension cords, killing 50 people and injuring 270 more.

Consider using National Electrical Safety Month as a springboard to offer refresher trainings to your workers on the electrical safety issues that are most pertinent to your company, such as:

  • Lockout/ tagout procedures
  • Arc flash awareness
  • De-energized equipment
  • Proper use of personal protective equipment
